About the artist
Genevieve Bicknell, an artist and film maker based in Edinburgh, Scotland, came to film by way of social anthropology and then painting. Her work explores themes of family, memory and of how we relate to others and to ourselves. During her studies she did camera and sound on a feature documentary (currently in production) in Yemen. The film explores the effect of the revolution on the dynamics within a family. Her MFA graduation film The Bicknell was a personal documentary about her relationship to her family. The experience led her to work more closely in collaboration with her subjects, an approach which she has developed further in Swallow. Outside of film, Genevieve paints, writes occasional pieces for radio and works in mental health. Swallow is her first film since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art.
