Izabela Plucińska

About the artist

Born in 1974 in Koszalin, where she graduated from secondary art school. She studied animation at the Film School in Łódź, as well as graphics and design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź and at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF in Germany. Received scholarships from DAAD, Nipkow Programm, and DEFA Stiftung in Berlin. Among many of her Plasticine animations, “Jam Session” (2005) brought her most success, being honoured with numerous awards, including the Silver Bear for short film at Berlinale. Currently she works in Berlin, where she has her own production company Clay Traces.

Sexy laundry, 12’

German-Polish-Canadian film co-production, in the emergence of which Szczecin played an important role. The picture is an adaptation of a theatre play by the Canadian author Michele Riml. Its protagonists are Alice and Henry – a couple of fifty-year-olds tha have been maried for 25 years and became trapped in routine. They try to reignite the flame in a luxury hotel, where they are spending the weekend.

In the Polish language version the voiceover is done by actors from Szczecin – Beata Zygarlicka and Konrad Pawicki. The film was shot in Berlin and Szczecin. Post-production and distribution of the film was done by the renowned Canadian film agency National Film Board, winner of multiple Oscars for short films. The music score was composed by Normand Roger, author of soundtrack to 6 Oscar productions.

The film has been co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and the Westpomeranian Film Fund POMERANIA FILM.

The Szczecin Academy of Art and the 13muz Cultural Centre are strategic partners of the project.

Afternoon, 3'

”Afternoon” is a commentary written for two voices, which concerns one short moment shared by a man and a woman. Although they are both completely absorbed by their duties and do not pay attention to one another, suddenly, due to an unexpected event, they see each other once again.

What is memory loss? In a labyrinth of fear, a loved one becomes a stranger, a house becomes a trap. Going in the dark, tracing the known objects and shapes a heroine tries to come back to life, that used to be her own.

Portret Susanne , 15'

A small hotel, a man, who tries to avoid the hunger of love by overeating. Still, the longing for his beloved Suzanna can not be satisfied with plates of cold meat, vegetables, and fruit. When the protagonist goes to town in search of food, he accidentally hurts his left foot, which surprisingly transforms into Suzanne. Since then they have become inseparable... that is only the beginning of a surreal story about loneliness, envy and love.

Wieczór, 3'

”Evening” is the third part of Izabela Plucińska's trilogy (after ”Breakfast” and ”Afternoon”). The film shows the most intense emotions of the married couple. Throughout the window go: a TV, chairs, a table, teacups, flowers, photos, the walls getting knocked down in the end. An argument reaches its peak in a 3-minute nutshell.

After a train accident, four passengers wake up on the beach. It is sunny and warm, the sky is blue, seagulls squark. Maybe it is a good idea to take a swim in the sea? Or maybe they just float from here to the afterworld?
