Retired professor of the University of Szczecin is writing a monograph about Żabnica, his home village by the Oder river. While looking for the materials for the monograph he notices that his observations concerning what happened to post-war inhabitants of his village also applies to the inhabitants of all Western Pomerania. He also recognises the German past of this land and the similarity of fate: “as a result of the war Germans lost their Eastern lands, and Poles lost their Eastern lands.” He discovers the plight of the newcomers who settled in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship area and the drama of German deportees. He notices that war and all totalitarianism is the evil that destroys the work of generations. Building the identity of Western Pomerania means building a future in cooperation, also with our neighbours on the other side of the Odra river.
